FAQs

When is it on?

Wings Over Illawarra is an ANNUAL event held on the last SUNDAY of February each year.
WOI 2011 is on SUNDAY 27 February 2011.

What are the open hours?

WOI 2011 public hours are 9:30am - 3:30pm.

What attractions are there?

The following major attractions will be presented at the Open day, (subject to weather and serviceability affecting aircraft):
• Displays from Businesses located at the airport e.g. aircraft maintenance, general aviation, charter flights and replica aircraft construction.
• The historic aircraft collection operated and flown by HARS, which includes: a Lockheed Super
Constellation (“Connie”); A Catalina Flying Boat; Two Lockheed Neptunes; Two Douglas Dakotas, Douglas DC4; De Havilland Drover, Tiger Moth and Vampires; Winjeel; Cessna 310 and 170; Grumman Tracker, Sabre, Hunter, Cobra.

• Light aircraft participating in the Fly In operated by SAAA Chapter 4 (South Coast) members.
• Visiting “ Warbirds” aircraft from the Temora Aviation Museum.
• RAAF “Roulettes” Aerobatics Display Team from East Sale and much much more!

What are the arrangements for Car and Bike Clubs attending?

Car and Bike Clubs will be parked in a separate restricted area, for viewing by the general public.
It is strongly recommended that Car and Bike Clubs rendezvous first, nearby to the airport, and then arrive at the airport together as a convoy, and aim to be in place no later than 9:00am on the day, to avoid being caught up in the heavy traffic once the general public begins to arrive for the 9:30am start.
Cars and Bikes arriving individually may have to be parked away from their club Individual Cars and Bikes can arrive and leave at any time but it is requested that clubs stay till the end of the Open Day at 3:30pm.
All persons arriving in a display car or bike will be given a wristband providing free multiple admission to the historic aircraft areas.

I am thinking of entering a display or stall - What should I do?

Please contact the WOI coordinator to discuss your proposal and find out whether a display area can be allocated. All exhibitors must have their own liability insurance, and pay a site fee after being accepted.
The site fee is as determined by the Shellharbour City Council.

What will be there on the day?

WOI 11 Will Provide A Major Display Of Aircraft Featuring Current and Historic Aviation Including the
Historical Aircraft restoration Society (HARS), The Temora Aviation Museum; Defence Assets (Including A
Recruiting Display, RAAF Roulettes, F18 Hornet And C130 Hercules; Army Red Beret Parachute Team;
Navy And Army Helicopters Including Navy Historic Flight Huey);
A Sports Aircraft Fly In;
RFDS and CareFlight Displays, Scouts Air Wing;
A Major Vintage Car And Vintage Bike Clubs Rally with active display arenas;
Vintage Farm Machinery;
Food stalls and children's entertainment areas.

Travel by Train

Albion Park Railway Station will be specially staffed for the WOI Open Day and there is an hourly timetable (click here) so park at Wollongong/ Unanderra or Oak Flats and catch the train to Wings.

You will just need to walk across the Highway using the traffic lights and you are at the edge of the airfield car park area but have avoided the traffic jams and parking fee.

What are the costs?

Public parking within airport:- $5 per car $20 per bus. (Note: there is a Railway Station immediately opposite the airport and WOI 2011 can be easily accessed by using the train) Admission to WOI 2011 display areas (e.g. Aviation displays including HARS/ Temora Aviation Museum aircraft; Defence displays; Vintage Car and Bike Club displays, Model aircraft; Vintage Farm machinery, food stalls and children's entertainment areas are all covered by:
Admission to WOI 11 Display Areas: $15 per adult - $10 Concessions - $5 Child At School - $40 Family.
Admission will be wristband which will enable re-entry if WOI 2011 attendees wish to catch the airfield shuttle bus to the Illawarra Light Rail Museum (ILRM) which will offer steam train rides at cost Inspection of some HARS Historic Aircraft (when open): Access by donation at each aircraft.

When Will Aircraft Be Flying?

WOI 10 is an airport Open Day, and there will be constant movement of civilian aircraft across the whole day. The Defence aircraft flying times and parachute displays will be listed on this site once they are finalized.

Can clubs set up recruiting & display stands?

All Car, Bike and Hobby Clubs attending are encouraged to bring along their own recruiting displays. There will be no cost space available for these displays, but the Open Day organisers cannot provide any equipment for this purpose.
